Corner

Also called: Corner time, Stand in the corner, facing the corner

Standing facing the corner of the room, still and silent: time to reflect, or to wait.

How to take it

Stand facing the corner of a room, a hand’s width from the walls. Feet together or hip-width apart, knees soft. Your hands join behind your back, or rest behind your head if that is what was asked. Your nose does not touch the wall. You stay still and silent, and you do not turn round until you are invited to.

What it says

Borrowed from school punishment, the corner takes away sight and speech: you are no longer in an exchange, you wait. Depending on the framework, it is a role-played punishment (see Glossary) or a wait charged with anticipation, often before or after a spanking. It is found mainly in spanking culture, much less in protocol lists.

Variants

  • Hands behind your head, for a few minutes at most.
  • Kneeling facing the wall, on a cushion.
  • Sitting on a chair facing the corner, when standing is difficult.
